Overview

The Caisson Platoon Master Plan addressed several facility deficiencies at the Caisson Platoon’s training facility at Ft. Belvoir. The Caisson Platoon’s mission is to honor deceased Servicemen and women by carrying them to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. In support of this critical mission, The 1st Battalion, 3rd U.S. Infantry sought to increase Caisson Platoon effectiveness and its capability to support The Old Guard and Military District of Washington missions by creating professional world-class stables at Ft. Belvoir.

The area development plan proposed a new indoor riding arena with a classroom, veterinarian room, office, kitchen, tack room, restrooms, lockers, and workshop to allow the year-round training of Army Horsemen. The pasture was expanded to allow for rotational grazing of the horses and to allow 70% vegetated ground cover to address existing erosion and flooding issues. To improve security, the design includes new perimeter and containment fences with a new entrance that embodies Fort Belvoir’s historic character. The plan also addresses circulation and parking issues by redesigning paved areas to provide compliant parking, staging, and maneuvering of large vehicles, including a nine-horse trailer. The plan was carefully developed to integrate sustainable design and limit impact to critical ecological areas including the Accotink Bay Wildlife Preservation Area.

Klavon received an exceptional CPARS rating.
