strawberry way

Pittsburgh, PA

Overview

Located in the heart of downtown Pittsburgh’s cultural and business districts, Strawberry Way is a major link to numerous social and artistic institutions in the downtown area. Yet, it is an eyesore. Despite the nature of this undesirable space, it is still heavily used by pedestrians. The goal was to transform a four block streetscape of backdoors and industrial infrastructure into a place for pedestrian occupation without making it exclusive, or compromising its highly urban nature. Our design brings new energy back into this space using variations on the theme of light. The elimination of sidewalks and potential designation of the alley as a “pedestrian mall” changes the primary occupancy of the alley from vehicular to pedestrian. A single line of light runs along the length of the alley from Smithfield to Grant Streets, thus knitting the four blocks and radically different architectural styles together into a unit. A concrete block wall is transformed into a screen, and the alley becomes an opportunity for visual artists to publicly display their work, or for cultural resources in the city to advertise their exhibits and events. Strips of illuminated glass block pavers act as markers of “happenings” on the alley. Strips and blocks of color provide ambiance and light.
