south side trail

pittsburgh, PA

Overview

Pittsburgh’s rebirth has largely been due to the rejuvenation of its waterfronts into vibrant, active spaces. The Three Rivers Loop Plan brings purpose and focus to this city-wide revitalization effort.

The project site is located on the South Side along the Monongahela River between 1st and 10th Streets. Friends of the Riverfront invested in this project in an effort to encourage community reinvestment in an area of the Pittsburgh waterfront that was once industrial and largely neglected.

Through a series of community and stakeholder meetings, Klavon designed the riverfront trail to include the reintroduction of active and passive recreation on land and on the water, facilitated by a meandering bicycle path, native plantings, lawns, and steps to the river. Historic locations, both human and ecological, are coupled with spaces for activities, encouraging users to indulge their curiosity. The native landscape palette promotes ecological and public health by providing wildlife habitat and purifying water.
