south side park master plan
south side local development company | pittsburgh, PA
Overview
Klavon was hired by the South Side Local Development Company and the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association to complete a planning study of the South Side Park with the purpose of creating a new vision for the underutilized, 65 acre park in Pittsburgh’s South Side. Klavon led a community-driven planning process, resulting in three schematic plan alternatives, including several future development projects, and a master plan report, documenting the process and results of the study.
Through a dynamic visioning and charrette process, Klavon worked with the community and local stakeholders to identify the following goals: provide historic connections, ensure sustainable design, create educational opportunities, create a maintenance plan, introduce public art, create artful lighting, maintain simple design concepts, create a neighborhood attraction, maintain balance between organized and unprogrammed space, take advantage of the views, connect the “Flats” with the “Slopes,” provide a gateway from 21st Street to East Carson, define, enhance and mark entrances, and provide signage markers throughout the park. These goals guided the development of the master plan and were integrated in to each of the alternative plans. Klavon then worked with the South Side Local Development Company to identify a path forward by prioritizing future development projects and identifying potential funding sources.
