Margaret morrison reflection garden

Carnegie mellon university | Pittsburgh, PA

Overview

The Margaret Morrison Reflection Garden is an intimate gathering space that integrates green infrastructure to solve flooding issues at Margaret Morrison Hall, one of the Carnegie Mellon University’s most iconic buildings. The site is located at a low point, where storms used to flood the Margaret Morrison Hall’s basement. The University sought a green solution to the flooding, and after the design and installation of the reflection garden atop of a large bioretention cell, Margaret Morrison Hall has never flooded. The design highlights prominent architectural features of the building while creating a welcoming outdoor gathering space. The pavement and vegetation divide the space into smaller outdoor rooms, which provide intimate spaces for smaller groups.
