Jungle odyssey

Pittsburgh, PA

Overview

Klavon worked with the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium on a new exhibit, Jungle Odyssey, which was to incorporate outdoor enclosures for the animals, buildings with green roofs, trails for visitors to navigate the animal exhibits, children play areas integrated along the trail, water features, drainage areas, and a service road. Given the steep topography of the two-acre site, locating design elements while maintaining ADA accessibility was a challenge. The planting palette included large leaf ‘jungle like plants’ that are adaptive and indigenous to our region, along with tropical plants that will be replanted each year.

Klavon worked with the Zoo to develop different experiences along the trail including a willow tunnel that ‘mists’ as patrons enter the exhibit, butterfly benches for rest and/or photo opportunities, and a waterfall feature built into the slope. For a variety of experiences, boardwalks and wood bridges were incorporate along the trail. Different natural play opportunities were provided, including stepping stone mushrooms, wood balance beams, and hidden animal mosaics along the trail for kids to find and discover. There are also … Several interactive educational stations provide adults and kids the chance to learn more about animals and sustainability. A small amphitheater was also included for presentations.

A zip line runs across the whole exhibit, providing a fun amenity, and a whole new view of the exhibit!
