Hazelwood Green is a 178-acre redevelopment project set along the Monongahela River located in the neighborhood of Hazelwood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With future connections to regional and interstate bicycle trails, as well as close proximity to both South Side and Oakland neighborhoods, the site has the potential to become a nexus in the greater Pittsburgh region.
Site remediation efforts under the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection’s Act 2 on the former steel mill site began in 2000. Construction of the first building, Carnegie Mellon University’s Advanced Robotic for Manufacturing (ARM) Institute located in the iconic salvaged Mill 19, began in 2017.
The 2-acre plaza is located adjacent to the ARM Institute and will be the first public open space to be built on the site. It will serve as the central public space for Hazelwood Green and will be critical to attracting interest and activity on the site. Specific objectives for the plaza include: establishing a civic platform, creating a sense of place, attracting market interest, integrating innovative design, contributing to the sustainability performance objective for the site, and allowing for adaptability to changing conditions whether market-based, climate-based, or something entirely different.
