ppg paints arena (formerly consol energy center)

pittsburgh, PA

Overview

The home for the Pittsburgh Penguins is a challenging site that drops topographically approximately 50 feet from one side of the building to the other. The landscape creates a sense of connection between both sides of the building and creates several outdoor “rooms” for pedestrians. Landscaping consists of street trees, shade trees, and bulbs.

Populous (formerly HOK Sport) designed Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose arena that is currently the home to the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. Klavon was tasked with designing the exterior public spaces. This included the creation of plazas at each of the three main entries, streetscape for both Centre and Fifth Avenues, as well as a pedestrian connection along the glass spine of the building that serves to connect the Fifth Avenue Plaza to the Centre Avenue Plaza.

This project was the first LEED Gold arena in the United States.
